First Day Hints and Tips

Starting at a new early learning centre is an exciting milestone for both children and families. A little preparation can help make the transition smoother, build confidence, and create a positive first-day experience. Here are some simple tips to help your child feel comfortable, settled, and ready to begin their learning journey with Prepare Early Education.

Prepare for the First Day

• Talk calmly and confidently with your child about what to expect at the centre, including making new friends and participating in exciting activities such as painting, music, games, outdoor play, and exploring new toys.

• Be positive. Children often take their cues from their parents, and your confidence can help them feel excited and secure.

• Take advantage of our orientation process and bring your child to the centre for short visits before their official start date.

• Drive past the centre and point it out in the days leading up to their first day to help build familiarity.

• Involve your child in choosing their bag, drink bottle, sheets, or comfort items so they can recognise their belongings and feel included in the process.

On the Day

• Pack your child’s bag with all the essentials, including a water bottle, spare clothing, and any comfort items such as a favourite soft toy or pacifier. Please ensure all items are clearly labelled.

• Allow plenty of time in the morning so everyone can arrive feeling calm and unhurried.

• If possible, bring your child without siblings on the first day to help them focus on settling into their new environment.

• Keep your goodbye brief, calm, and confident. Our educators will support your child and help them become engaged in an activity.

• Always say goodbye before leaving. Use reassuring phrases such as, “I’m going now, and I’ll be back after rest time.”

• Remember that even if your child becomes upset, saying goodbye helps build trust and security. Leaving without a farewell can be confusing for children.

Afterwards

• Read the daily communication about your child’s day, including meals, sleep, toileting or nappy changes, and learning experiences.

• Speak with your child’s educators about the activities they enjoyed, any new friendships they formed, and highlights from their day.

• Check that you have collected all of your child’s belongings, including any comfort items.

• Display your child’s artwork and creations at home to celebrate their achievements and encourage conversations about their learning.

• Take note of upcoming centre events, family days, and special activities, and attend whenever possible.

• Stay connected by following your centre’s Facebook and Instagram pages for updates, events, and snapshots of learning.

The Importance of the First Day

A positive first-day experience helps children build trust in their new environment, develop relationships with educators and peers, and begin feeling safe and secure away from home.

While some children settle quickly and others may take a little longer, every child adjusts at their own pace. Consistency, encouragement, and strong partnerships between families and educators help create a smooth transition and support your child’s wellbeing.

The first day is not just about settling into a new routine—it is the foundation for a positive early learning experience where children can develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning.
